Every few years someone declares backlinks dead. In 2026, with AI answer engines reshaping search, the question feels sharper than ever. The honest answer: backlinks still matter, the rules have shifted, and the brands that understand the shift are winning twice; in Google and in AI.
Independent studies keep landing on the same conclusion: backlinks remain a meaningful ranking and trust factor, but quality and authority dwarf quantity. Incremental links do little until a site reaches a stronger overall authority tier; at which point well-placed links compound.
The most striking finding came from Ahrefs, who analysed 75,000 brands and found that brand mentions correlate with AI visibility far more strongly than backlinks alone (roughly 0.66 versus 0.22). Their framing is worth keeping: a crawler follows links to find content, but a language model follows mentions to form a judgement. Those are different operations, and AI optimises for trust, not navigation.
Here is the part most people miss: the work that earns a backlink is the same work that earns a brand mention. When a journalist cites your data, when a blogger recommends your product, when a directory lists your business; you usually get a link and a mention at once. A real link-building programme is, in practice, a reputation programme. It feeds Google and AI at the same time.
AI can flood the web with content, but it cannot make a trusted human choose to reference you. That choice; a link, a mention, a recommendation; is the scarce, defensible signal. It is why earned links are more valuable in the AI era, not less.
